Ask & You Shall Receive...

Not too long ago, I left a comment on Bob's blog, jokingly upset that I never got any freebies from the POM people like he did. Well, shortly thereafter I got an email from POM asking me if I'd like some free samples. Like I'd say no! I got the coupons last week and then proceeded to find somewhere to use them at. The coupons stipulate that the maximum price they could be redeemed for was $4.99. Of course, the local overpriced grocery store - being exactly as my moniker indicates, overpriced - sells the POM juices for $5.99.

I hate to say this because I like the idea of my local grocery store, but Safeway is now officially my favourite grocery store. It sells POM for the coupon price of $4.99 (additionally, milk and eggs are also cheaper there). It just happens to be in a different city and I have to travel some to get there.

Today I was near a Safeway however, as it was my day to do the baking at work. I took along my coupons and stopped by on my way home.

I got three different kinds of POM: plain pomegranate juice, tangerine-pomegranate, and blueberry-pomegranate, and I still have one coupon left over.

So, now what? What do I do with this stuff that is slightly more interesting than just drinking it?

Bob made a lamb shank dish with his... But I hate lamb.

Ideas:

- salad dressing (not terribly exciting)
- marinating stuff in it (I was thinking ribs, possibly chicken)
- making a dessert - but what?

Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone want to submit a recipe for me to try?

Sorbet! Pannacotta... daiquiris..
Mmm, can't wait to see what you make!
One thing that was a little upsetting is that all the American bloggers got a full case sent to them and the Canadians got a couple of coupons. (Plus taxes and such at our own expense..)

I second Donna's suggestion - I've made sangria, margaritas, etc. with it.

How about a braised pork loin? I've yet to try it, but now you have me curious. What about a sauce for any chicken, beef, pork, etc. (I know you know how to make a great sauce out of it.

Me, cc again. What about a sauce for ice cream or soaked cake or flavored icing or ice cream or sorbet.

Guys, I can't do drinks, I forgot to mention! Long story!

Natashya: a whole case? Seriously? And yes, I had to pay GST, bottle deposit, and environmental fee. It came to $1.09 in total.

Clueless: ah, pork loin! Yes, that is a definite possibility! Thanks for your input.

Congratulation!

Hmmm, maybe you can make Chicken Fahsenjan, or how about muhammara?!

Elra: do you have recipes for those?

Thanks for the shout out. :)

Hm. You could make a syrup for fruit salad out of it, although it would be strong. I'm still working on a teriyaki based on POM, the concept is sound but the balance is off. But that would obviously be good as a marinade for pretty much anything, if you were to make some.

I did a theme evening once for my wife. Her new passion was Pomegranate martinis, so I used a bottle of Pom to make a marinade for ribs. I also made a reduction that I soaked potatoes in prior to grilling them.

While both were interesting, tasted good, and made my wife happy; we never repeated the menu

How about reducing the juice until it's a thick, sweet syrup and then serving it warm over top of vanilla ice cream? Maybe sprinkle a few fresh berries too.

I loved my POM samples. I made smoothies and drank them - they were such great thirst quenchers!!

Hey Retorte, I have enjoyed your blog for awhile now. These are my first attempts to be a part of the food blogging community by commenting, but just wanted to share with you my Pomegranate Carolina Sweet BBQ sauce I made last night for my wife. Thanks for the inspiration...
