Magazine Monday #79 (on a Saturday): Guy Fieri's Soft Pretzels

Strange cravings are upon me these days, and while going through a pile of magazines taking up space on my coffee table, this soft pretzel recipe by Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives host Guy Fieri caught my eye. I have recently become a Triple D (or, as I like to call it, D3) fanatic. I don't know why it took me so long! Where has this show been all my life! It took a while for Guy to grow on me, but grow on me he has, and now I am addicted. This is probably another reason I wanted to make this recipe.

Unfortunately, I didn't think too much of Guy's soft pretzel recipe, which came in the January/February issue of Food Network Magazine. The recipe is here.

Lately, I have been practicing making bagels, which are boiled. I have posted before (here and here) about some pretzels I've made that are also boiled. I have to say, I much prefer that recipe and the boiling method over this non-boiled pretzel by Guy. Guy's are tasty for sure, and I enjoyed the stuffed ones (I used homemade pesto and mozzarella cheese to stuff mine), but they are, essentially, a pretzel-shaped bun without that nice chewy texture.

So, I'd give this a miss. Sorry, Guy! I love you, but this wasn't my cup of tea!

I'm in awe that you even attempted these...shame they didn't taste as good as they look.

I have such a deal with Guy - as a Women's Studies major all I see when I watch his show is a glutinous hyper-masculine white (Hello? "Triple D"?) America stuffing themselves with "manly" meat dishes without consciousness toward what such eating habits (and driving habits) do to the environment, our selves, and each other...

I'm probably being overly critical because I'm sure he's a lovely guy - I just have an issue with Diner's Drive-In's and Dives...

PS. Love your blog ;) And the Food Network... :)

FGU, they were pretty easy to make, but yeah, hadn't much pay-off. :(

Hi Kristy! Thanks for your comment! I see where you're coming from. I watch this show and see everything that is wrong with the North American diet and have to wonder how promoting food like this is promoting bad eating habits and contributing to the obesity epidemic and the other health issues associated with a crappy diet. I am at times surprised Guy isn't 800lbs and/or dead, but I have read in interviews that he only eats a small portion of the food on the show and that he has to exercise a lot.

Anyway, I agree with that portion of your argument. I'm not sure I see quite the same feminist angle as you do, though. I just enjoy the show for the craziness aspect and it has given me some good ideas to try in my own kitchen, which I always appreciate since I'm always on the lookout for new cooking challenges. I do enjoy Guy's passion and enthusiasm, too. You can definitely tell he's loving every minute of his job.

I also enjoy Eat St., which is about food trucks and street food. Again, not super healthy food overall, but great ideas!

Thanks for the honest rating! Not everything works out the way we'd hope.
