Life Is Good...

My good friend Pierce, AKA Tina Marie of Life in the Slow Lane at Squirrel Head Manor, gave me a wonderful tribute in a recent post, and bestowed upon me something entitled the "Life is Good" award.

I have met tons of great people through blogging, both this blog and my regular blog, and Tina has become such a great friend to me, such a source of strength and encouragement, that I really feel blessed to have her in my life - even though we have never met! So, thank you, Tina, for being there for me, for your support and for your constant friendship! I do hope we can meet in person one day in the not-too-distant future!

Of this award, Tina says on her blog: "The rules are, to accept this award, I shall answer the 10 questions below and pass the award to six fellow bloggers."

I may not be passing this along...I don't normally do that part of these awards, but I will answer the 10 questions!

1. If you blog anonymously, are you happy doing it that way; if you are not anonymous do you wish you had started out anonymously so you could be anonymous now?

I am only semi-anonymous, though I started out wanting to be completely anonymous. It's easy enough to find my name out if you've been reading this blog (or the other one) for any amount of time. I am happy with this, however, or else I would never give the hints to my real name. It's only been a problem on my other blog, which is why I changed the site over to WordPress & took it off search engine crawling.

2.
Describe one incident that shows your inner stubborn side.

Just one? Really? Hmmmmm... I have so many examples it's ridiculous. But let's stick with something simple: putting together furniture. I buy a piece that comes in a flat pack, and I will NOT give up on it until it's up and functional, even if it takes all night, even if the instructions are ridiculous (like Ikea's), even if I can't hammer straight - you name it!

3. What do you see when you really look at yourself in the face in the mirror?

Very complicated question. I see a Plain Jane who is pushing 40 and showing it.

4.
What is your favorite summer cold drink?

Simple: iced tea or girly cocktails! And frappuccinos!

5.
When you take time for yourself, what do you do?

I go lay down on my super comfy new couch (which came assembled!) and watch TV all day. Or I read & listen to music. I used to take long baths, but in my new place, there is no tub, only a cramped shower stall. :(

6. Is there something you still want to accomplish in your life? What is it?

I have a lot of things I want to accomplish in life, and I feel time is running out with some of them. I want to get married & have a baby. I want to travel. I want to write a novel. That is my starting list.

7.
When you attended school, were you the class clown, the class overachiever, the class shy person, or always ditching school? Describe who you were if not one of these.

I was the quiet kid who actually got along with her teachers and was thus labeled a brown-noser. I was also the bullied kid who was drastically marginalized & traumatized.

8.
If you close your eyes and want to visualize a very poignant moment in your life, what do you see?

Never mind!

9.
Is it easy for you to share your true self in your blog or are you more comfortable writing posts about other people or events?

Both.

10.
If you had the choice to sit and read or talk on the phone, which would you do and why?

God, I love a good chin wag on the phone and I don't do it often enough! But I also like to read. Either or.

So there you go! Thanks again, Tina!!!

More Awards!

Finsmom of Latest Addictions bestowed upon me these lovely awards today:

Thank you Finsmom - I really appreciate it!

I always feel awkward about re-awarding these because there are so many food bloggers out there I just adore and I hate to leave anyone out! So, I'm going to choose five random - totally random - food blogs I visit regularly.

Accountants Can Cook? (I love Cathy!)
My Tasty Treasures (combining sex & food like no other)
Curious Domestic (a fellow British Columbian)
My Year on the Grill (Dave is new to blogging - go say hi!)
Life in the Slow Lane at Squirrel Head Manor (Pierce is a good friend of mine and a great cook!)

Thank you to all my readers - old and new - for your continued support!

Awards & Meme Time

Alrighty! Instead of providing you with a "real" post, today I take care of some administrative stuff.

Palidor of Crazy Asian Gal tagged me with this "7 Things"-type meme. If you haven't visited her blog already, I suggest you do so ASAP because it's really wonderful!

Rules:

  1. Acknowledge the person who gave you the award (thank you very much, Palidor)
  2. Nominate 7 other blogs
  3. Share 7 personality traits.
My 7 personality traits:

1. Stubborn
2. Daydreamy
3. Honest (sometimes too much so)
4. Impatient (but I'm working on it)
5. Perfectionistic
6. Helpful
7. Determined

As for tagging seven others...I'm not going to do this, even though it's an official rule of the meme. I often opt not to tag, but rather invite those of you who would like to take this up to do so if they wish. So, if you do this, let me know, OK?

Secondly, Girlichef tagged me with a "Joy of Reading" meme. Here are the rules for it:
1. Collect the book that you have most handy.
2. Turn to page 161
3. Find the 5th complete sentence.
4. Site the sentence on your blog
5. Pass it on to 5 other bloggers.

OK, so the book I have most handy is You Know You're a Writer When... by Adair Lara. It's a cool little book that my friend Charlie sent me recently after he reviewed it on his blog. Unfortunately, this book is only 90 pages long, so I guess I can't use that. So, the book second closest to me is a novel by Elizabeth Haydon entitled Rhapsody, which I recently reviewed here. Great book, especially if you love fantasy fiction. Here is the requested sentence:

Grunthor plucked a long dagger from behind the small of his back and presented it to her with a deep bow.

So, there you go!

Again, I won't tag anyone, but if you'd like to participate, let me know.

Thanks guys!

Award/Meme Time

Cathy over at Accountants Can Cook? awarded/tagged me with this passionate blogger award. Thanks Cathy!

The rules are:

1. Put logo on blog.
2. List five things you are passionate about besides blogging.
3. Tag five people and let them know you've tagged them

OK, so five things I'm passionate about apart from blogging...

1. Music, in particular: Linkin Park, Nightwish, Evanescence, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Midnattsol, Leaves' Eyes, Xandria and many others in the various folk/Gothic/symphonic/melodic/female-fronted metal offshoots.

2. Reading. I am a total bookworm!

3. Hiking, camping, and outdoorsy stuff. And I live in the perfect area for this kind of stuff, too!

4. My friends and family!

5. Various mental health and social issues.

You know, I'm not going to tag anyone (hope you're down with that, Cathy). My foodblogging community is pretty small and I'm pretty sure this one is going to make the rounds pretty quick.

Why, Thank You

Blog pal Meg, of Megan's Munchies bestowed me with this lovely award today!

By way of acceptance speech, allow me to say this:

I really appreciate all of my readers and all those who take the time to comment here. This blog started off small, and I'm so pleased that nearly four years later, it's growing steadily and has gained a regularly following. I'm also grateful to those whom I've "met" on this food blogging journey - all of you have enriched my experience here in blogland!

As for whom to pass this on to, that's a toughie. Here are my five picks:

Cherie at Heightened Awareness. Cherie has been a regular reader of my "every day" blog for quite a while now, and she herself has recently decided to start a new blog that is not only devoted to food, but to celebrating the abundance in her life.

Emily Rose over at Sandmuffin. I recently discovered Emily Rose via the Foodie Blogroll, and I really enjoy her mixture of kitchen adventures and adventures in parenting.

My good friend (in real life, no less!) sp over at Whoville, who blogs about many things, including running and living the vegan life.

Helene of La Cuisine de Helene. Another find via the Foodie Blogroll, I have only very recently discovered Helene's blog, and I am always delighted to find new Canadian food blogs, particularly British Columbian ones! Her pictures are mouthwatering!

Finally, a blog I've been following for quite a while now, Garlicster. Featuring - you guessed it - garlic-centred recipes, this is your go-to place for all things garlic!

British 100

Let's be honest, the Brits are not known for their haute cuisine - in the right ways, that is. It takes a special person to appreciate the oddly named, often offally-centred dishes that hail from that fair isle. Since I am the product of a Brit and a first generation Canadian who was a product of other Brits, and since I've made several pilgrimages to my ancestral lands, I've eaten quite a few traditional English meals. But when I came across this list here, I saw that I had missed out on a lot.

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Link back to Food Stories, if you would be so kind.

1. Grey squirrel.
2. Steak and kidney pie (I think this is disgusting! My dad has it for his birthday every year and my mom used to make the filling from scratch. She used to get a kidney from the butcher and soak it in the dishpan for a day. Since my dad's birthday is Christmas Eve, one of my most prominent memories of that holiday is going into the kithen to get a drink of water or something and seeing a soaking kidney in the dishpan, oozing its fluids into the water. EW!)
3. Bubble and squeak
4. Spotted dick
5. Hot Cross Buns
6. Laver bread
7. Toad in the hole
8. Shepherds pie AND Cottage pie (hate both with a passion!)

25. Haggis (not my fave thing in the world, I can tell you that)
26. Beans on toast
27. Cornish clotted cream tea (my total fave thing EVER!)
28. Pickled egg (sorry...just plain gross-sounding)
